š Cities are starting to ban fossil fuel advertising
Amsterdam and Florence are leading a growing global shift
Two European cities just made a decision that signals a deeper cultural change.
Amsterdam and Florence have both approved bans on fossil fuel advertising in public spaces, joining a growing list of cities that are reconsidering how high-carbon products are promoted.
Amsterdam became the first capital city to fully approve such a ban, which will take effect on May 1.
The rule will apply across public areas including public transport and will cover advertisements promoting things like flights, petrol and diesel vehicles, and gas heating contracts.
Florence has now followed with its own vote, becoming the first city in Italy to introduce similar restrictions.
In total, more than 50 cities worldwide are now exploring or implementing limits on advertising tied to polluting products.
What makes this development interesting isnāt just the policy itself.
It reflects a shift in how cities think about influence.
Advertising shapes what becomes normal.
It reinforces which behaviours feel aspirational and which industries dominate public space.
When that environment changes, culture often follows.
And increasingly, cities are deciding that the future they want to build shouldnāt be promoted alongside the industries that threaten it.
Best,
