đ Concrete doesnât have to be boring anymore
A Dutch invention is turning grey walls into living systems
I saw something recently that made me rethink a material we all take for granted: concrete.
Normally, concrete is⊠well, concrete.
Grey. Hard. Functional. A bit soulless.
But a Dutch startup called Respyre is giving it a personality upgrade and honestly, itâs brilliant.
Theyâve created moss concrete.
Not a wall with plants attached.
Not a fancy green façade held together by pipes and irrigation systems.
The concrete itself is designed to host moss.
And the best part? Moss is the easiest plant you could ask for.
It doesnât have roots, so it doesnât damage buildings.
It clings lightly, grows naturally, and quietly gets on with its job.
And that job includes:
Cleaning the air.
Cooling the surroundings.
Softening harsh architecture.
Requiring nearly zero maintenance.
Imagine walking through a city where old buildings slowly turn green on their own.
Respyre has already rolled this out in 25+ projects across 10 countries.
And now theyâre working on moss roof tiles, which feels like the natural next step.
Itâs one of those ideas that makes you think:
Why havenât we been doing this all along?
Because sometimes innovation isnât about adding more.
Itâs about designing smarter.
đ Iâm curious: if something as rigid as concrete can become a living surface, what materials or systems in your industry could be rethought just as creatively?
Reply and tell me I always enjoy hearing your perspective.
Best,
Jasper
