Did you know?

Gardens in the UK and Northern Europe cover more land than all the nature reserves combined.

By adopting sustainable gardening practices, you can turn your garden into a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity and reduces your environmental footprint.

The big idea:

Gardening is a GREAT and simple opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment.

And the same goes for the outdoor areas around your business. Gardening practices help you create a green space that’s not only beautiful but also benefits the planet.

One of the simplest ways to start is by choosing native plants.

Native species are better suited to the local climate, require less water, and provide essential habitats for local wildlife.

In Scandinavia, for instance, planting native trees and shrubs can support a variety of birds and insects that are crucial to the ecosystem.

Another key practice is composting.

By composting kitchen scraps and garden waste, you can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills/ incineration/ biogas and create nutrient-rich soil for your plants.

This not only cuts down on waste ...but also reduces the need for chemical fertilisers.

Water conservation is also critical.

Collecting rainwater in barrels and using drip irrigation systems can help you water your garden efficiently without wasting this precious resource.

In regions where water conservation is a priority, such as parts of Denmark, these practices can make a big difference.

Finally, consider creating a wildlife-friendly garden.

By planting a variety of flowers that bloom throughout the year, you can provide food for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Building insect hotels or even better leaving a small area of your garden wild can also offer shelter for beneficial insects.
