🍃 Every business is creating an impact

Imagine you're sitting on a plane, waiting for take off. The cabin doors have closed, the safety demonstration is over, and the engines are starting up.

Then the pilot comes over the speaker and says:

"Good morning everyone. Before we take off, I should mention we haven't actually decided where we're flying yet. We'll head off in a general direction and work it out as we go."

You'd probably want to get off the plane immediately.

It sounds ridiculous because every flight starts with one thing: a destination. 

Once the destination is clear, everything else follows. The route, the fuel, the crew and every decision along the way are all based on knowing where the plane is trying to go.

Businesses work in exactly the same way.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about why some businesses naturally attract customers, talented people and great partners, while others have to work much harder to stand out.

A great product matters.

Excellent service matters.

But the businesses people remember are usually contributing to something bigger than themselves.

They have a clear sense of the difference they want to make, and that becomes their North Star. 

It influences the decisions they make, the products they develop and the way they show up in the market.

One of the questions I often encourage leadership teams to think about is this:

Why is the world a better place because your business exists?

It's a simple question and the answer should be based on understanding the positive impact your business is trying to create.

Once you got that you might still be thinking - what is my next move? One that makes sense business wise as well.
