đ Fast food is fuelling WAY more than appetites.
Itâs fuelling climate change.
Did you know?
Fast food might feel like a small indulgence, but its environmental impact is massive.
Take a moment to think about this.
In 2017, McDonaldâs alone consumed 1,420 gigawatt hours of energy. Thatâs enough to power over 130,000 homes for a year.
But the problem doesnât stop at energy consumption. Fast foodâs ripple effects extend to waste, emissions, and water pollution that disrupt ecosystems and fuel climate change.
For example, the beef used in those quick burgers is one of the largest contributors to methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that accelerates global warming.
Convenience, it seems, is coming at a massive cost to the planet, human health, and future sustainability.

The big idea:
Behind every bite is a chain reaction of environmental damage:
1. Waste overload:
In the US alone, some 10-15 billion kg of food waste is generated from fast food.
2. Plastic crisis:
Only 14% of fast food related plastic packaging gets recycled and over 269,000 tons of fast food related plastic end up polluting our oceans annually.
3. Energy drain:
The energy consumption of large chains like McDonaldâs highlights the sectorâs reliance on unsustainable energy practices.
4. Water contamination:
Fast food packaging releases harmful toxins into water systems, devastating marine life and biodiversity.
5. Skyrocketing emissions:
Beef production alone significantly contributes to methane emissions, which exacerbate climate change.
While fast food offers quick convenience, the long term costs are undeniable.
The question is, are we willing to keep paying this price?

Tip of the week:
Here are 4 practical ways to cut the environmental toll of fast food:
1. Choose sustainable options: Support fast food brands committed to eco friendly practices like biodegradable packaging, food waste reduction, and local sourcing.
2. Cook more at home: Home cooked meals reduce packaging waste and give you full control over ingredients and portions. This also likely will lead to a healthier diet.
3. Reduce plastic use: Carry your own reusable utensils and straws when dining out.
4. Advocate for change: Encourage local businesses to adopt sustainable packaging and recycling programs.
Fast foodâs promise of convenience comes with a steep environmental cost.
Itâs time to rethink our choices.
Not just what we eat, but how itâs produced and consumed.
