š Scientists unveiled a paint that does more than just coat
It cools buildings and pulls water from thin air
I came across something that felt like a moment of hope in the climate story.
Researchers at the University of Sydney have developed a paint that does two things at once:
It cools indoor spaces by up to 6 °C thanks to nano-engineered polymers that reflect sunlight.
It harvests water from humidity, even in arid zones where dew might appear at night.
Hereās why this matters:
Cooling buildings is one of the worldās biggest energy burdens.
Air-conditioning demand is skyrocketing, especially in cities and hot climates.
At the same time, water scarcity is growing, not just in deserts, but in suburbs, factories, tunnels, everywhere.
This paint happens to address both problems.
Prof Chiara Neto summed it up:
āThis technology not only advances the science of cool roof coatings but also opens the door to sustainable, low cost and decentralised sources of fresh waterā¦ā
So what are the implications for business and design?
Buildings could consume far less energy for cooling.
Roofs and walls become active systems, not passive surfaces.
Urban heat and water stress become design challenges, not just problems.
š Hereās the question worth asking:
In your industry, what surface, roof, wall or material is doing nothing, that could instead be doing two or three things?
Reply with IMPACT to explore how your business can turn material innovation into competitive advantage.
Best,
