🍃 The solution to this flooding problem had four legs and a flat tail

I've always found it fascinating how often nature solves problems differently to us.

A recent example from west London caught my attention.

For years, the area around Greenford Tube station regularly flooded after heavy rain.

The local council was preparing for expensive engineering work to solve the problem.

Then something unexpected happened.

A family of beavers was reintroduced to a nearby nature reserve.

As beavers naturally do, they started building dams.

Those dams slowed the flow of water, creating small ponds and wetlands that held rainwater back instead of allowing it to rush downstream all at once.

As a result, the water was released much more slowly, and the flooding around the station was dramatically reduced.

I love stories like this because they remind us that sometimes a problem doesn't need a bigger solution.

It needs a different way of looking at it.

Now back to the story about the beavers. 

Over the years, I've seen something very similar in manufacturing.

When a business is under pressure, the instinct is often to add something.

A new process. A new system. A new project.

Sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

But sometimes the breakthrough comes from looking at the system as a whole and questioning assumptions that everyone else accepts.

That's where I often see the biggest opportunities emerge.

Not just opportunities to improve efficiency, but opportunities to build a stronger business that creates a greater positive impact.
