🍃 VIDEO: Why global plastic negotiations keep failing and a new idea to fix them.
What if we split plastic into essentials and everything else?
The world produces 400 million tons of plastic every year.
Only 9% gets recycled.
By 2060, production is set to triple.
In 2022, countries agreed to create a legally binding treaty to control plastics.
But since then? Negotiations have collapsed again and again.
The main conflict?
Whether to cap the amount of plastic produced worldwide.
Some argue caps would hurt essentials like healthcare, renewable energy, and food packaging.
And they’re right, not all plastic is equal.
That’s why I believe the solution is to split plastic into two categories:
Essentials → no cap.
Everything else → capped, forcing market forces to prioritise value over waste.
It’s not a perfect solution. But it’s a starting point for real progress.
👉 In the video below, I break down the problem and share why this approach could create the common ground negotiators need.
