🍃 You approved this cost years ago
There's a good chance nobody has questioned it since
One of the most interesting things about costs inside a business is that they don't always start out hidden.
In fact, many of them are approved consciously.
- A process gets introduced.
- A supplier agreement is signed.
- A policy is implemented.
- A reporting requirement is added.
At the time, it all makes perfect sense, right?
Then something interesting happens.
The business moves on.
People change roles.
Priorities shift.
New systems are added.
And before long, nobody remembers why that particular cost exists in the first place.
It simply becomes part of how the business operates.
That's why some of the biggest opportunities to create both business value and positive impact come from taking a fresh look at something old.
A supplier agreement that hasn't been reviewed in years.
Energy consumption that's accepted as fixed.
Material losses that everyone assumes are unavoidable.
Operational practices that have quietly become part of the furniture.
This is one of the themes I explore in my upcoming video about making sustainability profitable in manufacturing so businesses can create even greater impact.
Over the last 25 years, I've seen businesses create significant business value and positive impact simply by questioning things they had accepted for years.
